Hello. Thanks for visiting my website. My name is Beth
Rand and I am a theatrical lighting designer and theatre manager. During
the school year I manage the two PACs in the Snohomish School District and
during the summer I freelance as a theatrical lighting designer.
I began my technical theatre career at my own high
school theatre. I was lucky enough to go to a school that had a
performing arts center which brought in outside events.Students
from the high school work alongside a professional crew for these plays, musicals,
operas, movies, lectures and so on. In college I majored in “Drama;
emphasis Stage Lighting”.
I have worked in technical theatre on and off for over thirty years now;
in educational and professional settings. I have been designing lighting
since the early 80's and have designed over 100 shows. Since 1997 I have been working
with 5th to 12th grade student stage lighting crews. It’s been my experience that
technical theatre students are some of the most highly motivated,
dedicated, energetic, team-oriented, professional-acting and technically
proficient students you can hope to work with. A teacher how
professional and “on the ball” the students on my lighting crew were. Now I lead
a professional crew who mentor and support the high school crews, and who work
the outside events coming into the PACs.
When I am working with technical theatre students on a light crew, I am
always pleased to see that, as well as increasing their proficiency in the
curriculum content, by the end of their time with me, my students have
further developed a broad range of skills that will benefit them
throughout their lives, such as: creative thinking, teamwork, decision
making, problem solving, perseverance, working with different
personalities and standards, analytical thinking, self-responsibility and
responsibility to others.
I am very much inspired with the prospect of being able
to give the invaluable opportunities that I was given as a high school
student to today’s students. I’m excited to be working with Theatre Arts
teachers in junior high and senior high schools to bring these valuable
experiences and learning opportunities to their students.
